elder fall

Home-based accidents are a particular concern for senior citizens; the most prevalent and dangerous form of accidents is falling, which is the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries to people over 65. Accidental falls result in hip fractures, broken bones and head trauma, and 75 per cent of all senior falls occur in the home.

Clearly, protecting senors from the hazards of falling in their homes is of paramount concern requiring urgent action to implement. Focusing on fall prevention, the following precautions are advised:

  • Eliminate scatter rugs completely. or, second best, use only scatter rugs that have non-slip rubber backing
    .
  • Ensure adequate lighting in hallways and install hand rails along their length.

  • Replace all wall switches with illuminated ones that are easy to see and reach in the darkness.

  • In the bath, install grab bars adjacent to the bath, the shower and the toilet. The exact location of grab bars will depend on individual needs and must be carefully considered with a Certified Aging In Place Secialist (CAPS). Also, grab bars must be installed with solid backing in the walls that will make it impossible to pull the gab bar off the wall. Towel bars must not be used as grab bars but grab bars may be used as towel bars.

  • Also in the bath, use non-slip rubber mats in the shower and the tub, and consider using a shower chair and a hand held shower head.

  • In the kitchen, move most commonly used items within easy reach, e.g.,on the lowest shelves and in the lower cabinets. Avoid using stools and chairs to reach items placed in higher locations.

  • In the bedroom, consider using bed rails for support in getting in and out of bed. You may become dizzy in changing from a lying position to a sitting position and the rail will give you stability while you become accustomed to the new position.

  • Eliminate clutter. Keep closets, shelves and cabinets free of excessive items that are awkward to reach. Maintain easy access to things you use the most.

My agency specializes in providing "aging in place" services. If you wish, we can offer the guidance, materials and installation for all or any of the features listed above. I'd be happy to chat with you about your requirements at 973.954.3388.
